Training, not just Education

Education makes people knowledgeable about a subject or task, and helps them understand. It tells them what to do, and might even tell them how to do it. It includes steps, procedures, techniques, rationale and theory. But it isn't training.

Training makes people more proficient. Many so-called training programs educate people rather than train them. While education enables people to know more about a subject, training makes them skillful at actually performing the related tasks. Education precedes training, but, alone, it creates no lasting effect and has limited value.

Training makes people skillful enough to succeed on the job. That comes only from hands-on experience, counseling, and getting a feel for it. The feel for doing it is the skill. To put it into perspective, would any of us have confidence in a surgeon or pilot who had been educated but not trained? Or, for that matter, do you consider well-educated new law school graduates trained?
